GCSE Glossary — Key Terms Across All Subjects

Assessment Objective (AO): The skills and knowledge being assessed. Different subjects have different AOs (e.g., AO1: demonstrate knowledge, AO2: apply knowledge, AO3: analyze and evaluate).

Coursework: Written or practical assignments completed during the course, contributing to the final grade.

Grade Boundary: The minimum marks required to achieve each grade (9-1) for each subject and paper.

Foundation Tier: The lower tier of a subject, covering grades 1-5. More accessible content and questions.

Higher Tier: The upper tier of a subject, covering grades 4-9. More challenging content and questions.

Non-Exam Assessment (NEA): Assessment that is not through a formal examination. Includes coursework, practical assessments, and oral assessments.

Paper: A written examination component. Most subjects have 1-3 papers.

Specimen Paper: A sample paper provided by the exam board to illustrate the format and style of questions.

Tiered Assessment: Splitting a subject into Foundation and Higher tiers to accommodate different ability levels.

Analogy: A comparison between two things, highlighting similarities for explanatory effect.

Antithesis: A rhetorical device contrasting two opposing ideas in a balanced phrase. Example: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Colloquial Language: Informal, everyday language used in conversation. Creates a casual, relatable tone.

Connotation: An idea or feeling a word invokes in addition to its literal meaning. “Home” connotes warmth and safety.

Denotation: The literal, primary meaning of a word, independent of associated feelings.

Dialect: A regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.

Euphemism: A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered too harsh. “Passed away” instead of “died.”

Hyperbole: Exaggerated statements not meant to be taken literally. Used for emphasis or effect.

Imagery: Language that appeals to the senses. Types: visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, gustatory.

Inference: A conclusion drawn from evidence and reasoning rather than explicit statements.

Irony: Expression meaning the opposite of the literal meaning. Types: verbal, situational, dramatic.

Juxtaposition: Placing two contrasting elements side by side for comparison and contrast.

Metaphor: A figure of speech comparing two unlike things without using “like” or “as.” “Time is money.”

Motif: A recurring element (image, symbol, idea) that develops or illuminates a theme.

Onomatopoeia: Words that imitate sounds. “Buzz,” “sizzle,” “crash.”

Oxymoron: A figure of speech combining contradictory terms. “Jumbo shrimp,” “deafening silence.”

Personification: Attributing human qualities to non-human things. “The wind whispered through the trees.”

Rhetorical Question: A question asked for effect, not requiring an answer. Engages the reader.

Simile: A comparison using “like” or “as.” “Brave as a lion,” “quick like lightning.”

Symbolism: The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. A dove symbolizes peace.

Tone: The attitude of the writer toward the subject or audience. Can be formal, informal, humorous, serious.

Allegory: A story with a hidden moral or political meaning. Characters and events represent abstract ideas.

Archetype: A universally understood symbol or pattern. The hero, the villain, the mentor.

Atmosphere: The mood or feeling created by the writer through setting, imagery, and language.

Catharsis: The release of strong emotions through art or literature. Aristotle’s concept from tragedy.

Climax: The turning point or most intense moment of a narrative.

Comedy: A literary work that is amusing and satirical, ending happily.

Conflict: A struggle between opposing forces. Types: character vs. character, nature, society, self.

Denouement: The resolution of a story’s plot after the climax.

Dramatic Irony: When the audience knows something a character does not, creating tension.

Enjambment: Continuing a sentence beyond the end of a line in poetry. Creates a sense of urgency.

Foreshadowing: Hints or clues about what will happen later in the story.

Free Verse: Poetry without regular meter or rhyme scheme.

Genre: A category of artistic composition characterized by shared conventions. Examples: tragedy, comedy, novel.

Hubris: Excessive pride or self-confidence, leading to a character’s downfall.

Imagery: Vivid descriptive language appealing to the senses, creating mental pictures.

Juxtaposition: Placing contrasting elements side by side for effect.

Literary Device: Techniques used by writers to convey meaning, create effects, or enhance style.

Lyric Poetry: Poetry expressing personal emotions and feelings, often in song-like form.

Monologue: A long speech by one character in a play or story.

Narrative Voice: The perspective from which a story is told. First person, second person, third person (limited, omniscient).

Pathetic Fallacy: Attributing human emotions to nature or weather. Rain reflecting sadness.

Plot: The sequence of events in a narrative. Structure: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.

Prose: Written language in ordinary form, without metrical structure.

Satire: The use of humor, irony, or exaggeration to expose and criticize human follies.

Stanza: A grouped set of lines in a poem, separated by blank lines.

Symbolism: The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities beyond their literal meaning.

Theme: The central idea or underlying meaning of a literary work.

Tragedy: A drama dealing with tragic events and unhappy ending, often involving the downfall of a protagonist.

Algebra: The use of letters and symbols to represent numbers and quantities in equations and formulas.

Angle: The space between two intersecting lines or surfaces, measured in degrees or radians.

Area: The measure of the surface enclosed by a two-dimensional shape. Unit: square units.

Average: A single value representing a set of values. Types: mean, median, mode.

Bearing: A direction measured in degrees clockwise from north. Expressed as a three-digit number (e.g., 045°).

Circle Theorems: Theorems describing relationships between angles, chords, tangents, and arcs in circles.

Compound Interest: Interest calculated on the initial principal and accumulated interest. A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt).

Congruence: Two shapes are congruent if they have the same shape and size.

Data Handling: Collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data. Includes charts, graphs, and statistics.

Enlargement: A transformation that changes the size of a shape but not its proportions. Described by scale factor and center.

Factorization: Expressing a number or expression as a product of factors. x² - 5x + 6 = (x-2)(x-3).

Frequency: The number of times a value occurs in a dataset.

Frequency Diagram: A graphical representation of frequency data. Types: bar chart, histogram, frequency polygon.

Gradient: The steepness and direction of a line. Calculated as (change in y) / (change in x).

Highest Common Factor (HCF): The largest number that divides two or more numbers without a remainder.

Indices: Powers or exponents. aⁿ means a multiplied by itself n times.

Inequality: A mathematical statement comparing two expressions using <, >, ≤, ≥, or ≠.

Linear Equation: An equation of the form y = mx + c. Graphs as a straight line.

Lowest Common Multiple (LCM): The smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers.

Mean: The sum of all values divided by the number of values.

Median: The middle value when data is ordered from smallest to largest.

Mode: The value that appears most frequently in a dataset.

Parallel Lines: Lines in a plane that never meet. Always the same distance apart.

Perimeter: The total distance around the edge of a two-dimensional shape.

Pie Chart: A circular chart divided into sectors, showing proportions of a whole.

Probability: The likelihood of an event occurring, expressed as a number between 0 and 1.

Pythagorean Theorem: In a right-angled triangle, a² + b² = c², where c is the hypotenuse.

Quadratic Equation: An equation of the form ax² + bx + c = 0. Solved by factoring, completing the square, or formula.

Ratio: A comparison of two quantities by division. Written as a:b or a/b.

Reflection: A transformation that flips a shape over a line (mirror line).

Rotation: A transformation that turns a shape around a fixed point (center of rotation).

Similarity: Two shapes are similar if they have the same shape but different sizes. Corresponding angles are equal.

Standard Deviation: A measure of how spread out numbers are from the mean.

Symmetry: A shape has symmetry if it can be divided into matching parts. Types: line, rotational.

Transformation: An operation that moves, changes size, or reflects a shape. Types: translation, rotation, reflection, enlargement.

Translation: A transformation that slides a shape without rotating or reflecting it.

Trigonometry: The study of relationships between angles and sides of triangles. SOH CAH TOA.

Volume: The amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional object. Unit: cubic units.

Atom: The basic unit of a chemical element, consisting of a nucleus (protons and neutrons) and electrons.

Carbon Cycle: The biogeochemical cycle by which carbon is exchanged among the biosphere, atmosphere, oceans, and geosphere.

Cell: The basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms.

Chemical Change: A change resulting in the formation of new substances with different properties.

Chromosome: A thread-like structure of DNA and proteins carrying genetic information.

Condensation: The change of state from gas to liquid. The reverse of evaporation.

Control Variable: A variable kept constant in an experiment to ensure a fair test.

Density: The mass per unit volume of a substance. ρ = m/V.

Diffusion: The movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration.

Ecosystem: A community of living organisms interacting with their non-living environment.

Electromagnetic Spectrum: The range of all types of electromagnetic radiation, from radio waves to gamma rays.

Element: A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.

Enzyme: A biological catalyst that speeds up chemical reactions in living organisms.

Evaporation: The change of state from liquid to gas at the surface below boiling point.

Food Chain: A linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass.

Force: A push or pull acting on an object, measured in newtons (N). F = ma.

Gene: A unit of heredity that is transferred from parent to offspring and determines a trait.

Genetic Variation: Differences in genes among individuals within a population.

Habitat: The natural environment where an organism lives.

Homeostasis: The maintenance of a stable internal environment in living organisms.

Independent Variable: The variable that is changed or controlled in an experiment to test its effects.

Inheritance: The process by which genetic information is passed from parents to offspring.

Kinetic Energy: The energy of motion. KE = ½mv².

Magnetic Field: The area of force around a magnet where magnetic materials experience a force.

Mass: The amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms (kg).

Metabolism: The sum of all chemical reactions occurring in a living organism.

Mixture: A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded.

Natural Selection: The process by which organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and reproduce.

Nucleus: The central part of an atom containing protons and neutrons. In cells, the control center containing DNA.

Periodic Table: A tabular arrangement of chemical elements organized by atomic number and electron configuration.

Photosynthesis: The process by which green plants convert light energy into chemical energy. 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂.

Predator: An animal that hunts and kills other animals for food.

Prey: An animal that is hunted and killed by a predator for food.

Protein: A complex organic molecule made of amino acids, essential for growth and repair.

Respiration: The process of releasing energy from glucose. Aerobic: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy.

Solution: A homogeneous mixture of a solute dissolved in a solvent.

Variable: Any factor that can change in an experiment. Types: independent, dependent, controlled.
